SRAM has just released early details of a safety recall for its new RED22 and S700 Hydro Road brakes shipped to OE and aftermarket customers after September 5th 2013. Exact details for the recall are currently unknown.

The recall applies to all Red 22 and S700 Hydro Road Rim and Disc brake systems with serial numbers between 36T30000000 and 42T39999999. The serial number can be found on the brake caliper (rim or disc) and on the outside of the box containing the product.

SRAM say that no previously made product is affected by this issue.

If you’re affected by this recall, it’s recommended that you stop using the product and contact your original place of purchase for replacement.

Ajdå, jag tänkte beställa en ny cykel just med S-700 skivbromsar idag. Det måste ju betyda att de inte får sälja cyklarna heller i så fall. Intressant

Om man har en cykel med hydraulisk fälgbroms borde det gå.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UPDATE: SRAM Road Hydraulic Brake Recall – STOP USE IMMEDIATELY

On November 4th SRAM identified and announced a technical issue with respect to a narrow production range of its RED 22 and S-700 Hydraulic Road Brakes. At that time, it was described as a performance and safety concern with no reported failures in the field.

It has recently come to our attention that during last weekend’s Cyclocross racing in the US, in sub freezing temperatures, several failures were reported. In these conditions the master cylinder seals failed to hold pressure resulting in abrupt loss of brake power, and an inability to stop the bike. These failures are related to product that is outside the originally stated date code range and unrelated to the original failure mode. No injuries have been reported to date.

As a result of this new finding, SRAM requests that anyone who has a bike equipped with SRAM Hydraulic Disc or Hydraulic Rim Brakes stop using the bike immediately. All products shipped to date, and currently in the market or in inventory will be recalled.

Further, we are asking our Bike Brand customers, OE factories, Distributors and Dealers to cease all sales and shipments of SRAM RED 22 and S-700 Hydraulic Road Brakes. A total of approximately 19,000 brake systems have been shipped to date into the global market.

Quarantine efforts currently underway with Factories, Bike Brands, and Distributors will be broadened to include all Dealers with inventory on bikes, or as Aftermarket product. Additional information related to timing and replacement of product will be forthcoming.

As originally announced we have reported this issue to the US CPSC and will be cooperating with the agency to announce a Safety Recall. We will also be contacting and working closely with appropriate like agencies in Europe and globally.

SRAM engineering and manufacturing is committed to the highest Quality standards. On behalf of all employees at SRAM we apologize for the business disruption to our customers business and to the individuals who have placed their trust in our products.

Thank you,

SRAM LLC

SRAM Road Hydraulic Brake Recall - Replacement Plan
We would like to outline for you our replacement plan. The logistics of execution are being hammered out but are not complete. Our first priority is safety our second priority is to get you back out riding just as fast as we can with mechanical brakes, and then with the new generation of hydraulic as soon as it is ready.

By region, here is how we plan to handle the recall, and consumers should work through their chosen local dealer for replacement:

Europe:
Through the customer’s chosen Dealer, SRAM will provide a mechanical brake system to replace the customer’s hydraulic rim or disc brakes.
SRAM also will provide to the customer an option of either receiving the new hydraulic braking system when the redesign is complete, or a check for EUR 150.
SRAM will provide a fair labor cost cash reimbursement to the Dealer for all installs.
Asia:
Through the customer’s chosen Dealer, SRAM will provide a mechanical rim or disc brake system to replace a customer’s hydraulic rim or disc brakes.
SRAM also will provide to the customer an option of either receiving the new hydraulic braking system when the redesign is complete, or a check for US$ 200.
SRAM will provide a fair labor cost reimbursement to the dealer for all installs.
North America:
SRAM is working with the Consumer Product Safety Commission to finalize a comprehensive and approved solution. Here is what we can commit for customers as we work through this process:
Through the customer’s chosen Dealer, SRAM will provide a mechanical rim or disc brake system to replace a customer’s hydraulic rim or disc brake system.
SRAM will provide a fair labor cost cash reimbursement to the dealer for all installs.
SRAM will provide a voucher for product or cash reimbursement in an amount to be determined between SRAM and the CPSC.
Here is the replacement matrix:

We are working hard to get replacement mechanical braking systems widely available in Europe, the US and Asia by January 15.
We expect the logistics for getting replacement product and reimbursement payments to be complete within two weeks. Given the global geography, there are differences in how we will need to execute. While we recommend that all customers use their local Dealer, the logistics will accommodate individuals choosing to install the replacement brakes themselves.
We continue to make progress on the hydraulic redesign. Our teams are working through the holidays on resolution. We anticipate a technical and production update on Monday January 15.
We apologize for the inconvenience and are trying to get you back on the road as quickly as possible.
