Good to get your opinion on it too. I feel pretty much exactly the same, but I guess I feel a bit more strongly that the final single track shouldn't be in there. Not having MTB experience (coming from a road background) it feels extremely rough to me on a bike without suspension. I think it...

    Serenade - Chinese carbon wheels

My friend has just set up his 27mm internal, 50mm deep gravel wheels today with 50mm RX Pros. I received the same wheels, but I've not done my yet.

Graveldäck - vilket är er favorit?

I am a big fan of Schwalbe Racing Ray/Racing Ralph in 2.1" width. I have them mounted onto 30mm internal Serenade wheels and WAM is 53mm. They roll at 20 watts, and they just rail around loose corners at ridiculous speeds. I am 99kg, and I run them at 1.4 bar front and 1.6 bar back on most...

We have the expression "grammar police" in English, but not word police as such.

My understanding is that it is really quite tough to organise a race here in Sweden, in terms of obtaining the correct permissions. I've discussed this at reasonable length with a friend at Abloc, as I've been involved with route checking, test riding and altering some of their gravel events...

Why? The average Swede speaks English as well as the average English person. I understand almost all the Swedish I'm reading, and occasionally have to use Google Translate. Typing Swedish on an English keyboard takes absolutely ages (all those extra vowels). I am a big believe in language as a...

Hmmmm. Yes, I agree, some single track is fine. But it shouldn't include drops that almost have to be jumped or large rocks and roots. Småland is absolutely spoilt for choice for amazing gravel. Every type possible. Before going over to compete at the UCI qualifier in Wales last September, I...

I just think gravel races should be on gravel (not asphalt, not MTB tracks) and MTB should be on MTB tracks, and not really gravel or asphalt. They are all, of course, just niches within the sport of cycling, but Sweden has such a vast network of gravel roads, I just don't know why you'd want...

There is something quite amusingly backwards about having an MTB race with perfect gravel (Cykelvasan) and a gravel race with technical MTB trails (this year's Gravel SM). Maybe we need a commonly agreed up definition of what exactly is gravel and what is MTB. For me, I am happy to see some...

I am all for a bit of technical gravel. It's where I do best really, as I predominantly train on gravel, so my bike handling is good. Technical gravel and lumpy single track with drops are two really different things though. I wish I'd taken some photos. I have been trying to find photos...

I've tested Halmstad, but not raced it. I found that course to be largely OK, but I didn't like that there was over 30km of asphalt, but also some extremely rough gravel sectors in the forest. It made equipment selection tough - do you go semi slick to focus on the asphalt or grippier tyres for...

I would say it does. I was out testing the Gravel SM course today. It's tight, technical and rough. No hills at all, but loads of extremely sharp corners where you have to slow down to almost nothing and then accelerate out. Before the single track at the end of the lap, I had an average of...

I heard that there are 60 full time employees for organising the two races (Vasaloppet and Cykelvasan). I guess they have to pay the salaries somehow. The only difference (I believe) is the handlebars. Straight bars: good. Drop bars: banned.

I take your point, and I do understand the history of the race. Your point about the most common bike being an MTB holds at the moment, but I believe that is shifting. In Norway last week, I couldn't believe how many gravel bikes I saw. Way more than the previous year. The best bike to ride...

Haha! That is just stupid! "why are gravel bikes banned?" "well it's always been that way" "why?" "because it's always been that way" That sort of nonsense really annoys me!

Thanks for the honest opinion of the whole experience! It is, as you say, one of those races where you sort of feel that it needs to be done, but beyond that, the appeal is limited. It does sound sketchy with the big group crashes. Not fun to get caught up in. I would hope that there aren't...

    The Gravel tråd

Come down to Virserum. I can plan you as many routes as you like, and we have nice accommodation that you can have half price as a Happyride member (250kr a night, so long as you don't mind bringing your own bedding and leaving the place clean). The area has outstanding gravel and very few...

    The Gravel tråd

You are literally on my backdoorstep! Give me a shout if you would like some routes. I know the area better than anyone - over 60,000km since moving here 4 years ago, mostly on gravel.

I take your point, but it's still frustrating. I'm always of the opinion that in a race, the fastest equipment should be used, provided it doesn't compromise safety. Given the non-technical nature of the course, I think that the safety might actually be a little improved with gravel bikes...

But it's kind of pointless though isn't it. 45km is a warm up. Like I said, if I'm going to drive all the way there, I want to compete. And why continue with the format of racing on a bike that is obviously inferior for the course? Winning time was 2:35 last year. I'm pretty sure that'd drop...
