happy ride for Canadian in Stockholm Oct 2-8?
Hi,

I've previously posted about being a Canadian coming to visit Stockholm the first week of October.

The hotel is booked (Sheraton Stockholm Hotel, address: Tegelbacken 6).

My question is how long of a ride is it to the closest trailhead from the Hotel? Some friendly members were kind enough to give me a map to show that it wasn't too far, but does that mean it's a 5km ride or 15km?

I'm asking because I won't have a car and only limited time to get out early each day (60-90 minutes) and for 1/2 a day on the weekend. My wife is coming and it's our anniversary weekend, so if I want to stay married I better not leave her alone in a foreign city too long while I have fun and ride eh? ;-)

If it's over 30 min to bike to the trail head from the hotel then I won't have a lot of time left to ride. Maybe I'm better off bringing my road bike instead and just stick to touring the paths/roads in town?

Or if the trailhead is too far to ride, can I bring my bike on the public transport system?

Any feedback is appreciated including expected weather and sunrise/sunset times etc. What will trails conditions typically be like, wet/muddy (in which case it might be difficult to bring a dirty bike back into the hotel eh?), lots of leaves?

Thanks guys!

Just love your priority! getting from sheraton to Hellas i.e Hammarbybacken (our largest and best trail area) will take you about 30min, a bit shorter if you find your way. Bring your hardtail with a set of allaroun tires (like racing ralph) and you will be set for all conditions. There is no way of telling the weather in early october. It can be short sleeve ans dry sunny trails or cold hevavy rains making life very hard.

welcome!

Yeah, on your single speed ;-) I would say 15 min from Sheraton to Hammarbybacken. But, as always, it depends on the speed. I think.

Thanks for the info guys.

I can usually cruise at 30 kph on the MTB so 15 min sounds about right for 5 km when I include downtown traffic etc.

While I'd love to do a group ride (maybe a guided tour on the weekend?), it's probably not going to happen for me at night. Firstly, I won't want to leave my wife with nothing to do, and secondly I want to actually be able to SEE and enjoy Swedish scenery etc.

How easy are the trails to find once I get to the trailhead at Hellas/Hammarbybacken? Is there some link to an online trail map - including the exact location of the trailhead?

Good link Sprokets for Sunrise/Sunset. I'm surprised Stockholm is not much different than Ottawa (Oct 2 - 7:03/6:40), I thought you guys were a good chunk further north than me.

OK, so I did a little more research and found the following link for a Hammarbybacken:

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=59.3013000,18.1110001

Is that the right location, a ski resort? Stockholm is more hilly than I expected.

So from my hotel I'd take Centralbron south to Hammarbyvagen, then east to Hammarbybacken?

Sorry for the detail, but I can't hook up with locals to ride during the day, I want to be able to still get out and ride. :-)

I wouldn't call it a ski resort. It's an old garbage dump covered with grass, but it has a ski lift (also used for downhill biking).

You can't go by bike on Centralbron, it's for cars only. But Vasabron goes parallel to Centralbron. If you stand outside the hotel facing south, you can see Vasabron straight ahead. Centralbron is to the right.

There are a lot of trails in the area closest to Hammarbybacken. I would recommend that you contiunue a bit to the place marked "Filosofens Grav" (the Philosopher's Grave) on the map and start the trail there. If you keep left after the first slope you should be able to follow a some nice trails. E.g. "Fem Svåra" ("five difficulties") http://www.stigoteket.se/stig.php?stig_id=34
But that area is criss-crossed with trails, so it's hard to describe a particular one.

But on the place marked "Dow Jones start" is a nice trail which should be easy to follow. Just like the real Dow Jones it rises quickly and drops even quicker. :)

In any case. Dont bring your road bike. You'll miss out on some world class trailriding. Im sure that your "halfday off" alone would be worth bringing your mtb. And dont worry. There will be plenty of guys willing to guide you. Just give us a heads up i week or so in advance. We'll call it the "October Commie Canuck ride"

As for the bike and hotel, yeah it will get a bit muddy. But im sure you could work something out with the hotel.

Rippa = "In any case. Dont bring your road bike. You'll miss out on some world class trailriding"

Thanks Rippa, that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I was on the fence about which bike to take but I think I'm close enough to the trailhead and the MTBing should be 'happy' enough to justify bringing it.

Sprokets - Thanks for the link to the map

I'll post the week before I arrive to see if I can hook up with a few of you locals.
