"So I got my first ride in on this tire today. I mounted on the rear, tubeless, on a Flow rim. Was tough to get seated up, and may still be weeping a bit of air along the bead seal and the rim, but the sidewalls didn't leak much at all.
First impression...I love this tire. It's made by Maxxis, and as Shiggy says above, I think it uses the same casing size as the Ardent. I've never ridden the Ardent, so I can't make a direct comparison. But from what I've read, the Monkey shares a lot in size and volume with the Ardent, but with great grip on slippery conditions. The sidewalls are super burly. If you can get them to work tubeless, expect to run super low pressures. My first ride was on my local trails: Oregon Coast rain forest. Heavy rain a couple days ago. Slippery roots. About as tough as slippery conditions get. This tire handled it all nicely. And I didn't even get the tire pressures as low as I could have. Not even close.
Over the course of 4 years, I've tried so many tires trying to get grip, especially on the rear. I've been on Rampages, Nobby Nics 2.35, the Spec. Purgatory 2.4, the Conti Trail King 2.4, the Bontrager Mud X. The only tire that handled my conditions as well as the Chunky Monkey was the Mud X, but that's only a 2.0 tire. The Monkey is so much wider, plus has the huge volume. I thought it rolled well, certainly better than the Rampage or the TK 2.4. I've finally found my go-to rear tire."
