Camera to record ride in Vätternrundan
Hello all,
My Swedish is rusty, but I am learning, hope English is ok.
I have participated in Vätternrundan. This will be my first challenge ever.
I wanted to record the race. According to most cyclists in forums, helmet mounted camera puts a strain on your neck. Stem mounted camera could lead to bad pictures due to vibrations at the stem.
My preference is to mount on the stem.
Any recommendations from the experienced cyclist with regards to which brand/model of camera for a stem mounted camera will be much appreciated.

Hello! Silly me brought a camera once, 2012, but I forgot all about it very soon. Don't have too high expectations, keep the camera safe and enjoy the pictures you get.

Gopros and similar action cameras can definitely be mounted on the handlebar. The image is stable enough for MTBs so that isn’t the problem. But you need a BIG battery/power bank and memory card to record everything (if that’s what you’re after).

Ok, I have already bought a big power bank. I will buy a memory card as well. Any particular model in gopros you can recommend?

I think chest or chin cam gives best perspective. Having handlebars in frame makes for much more interesting video.
Camera mounted to the bike, stem or otherwise, usually results in extremely bad audio because the road vibrations drown all sound.

Please don't force your mother in law to watch all 11 hours. :P

Gopros got good stabe from Hero 7 I think, so they can be had really cheap used. But the newer the better image, of course. Gopros are notoriously buggy though. Sometimes mine freezes for weird reasons and I have to pull the battery. Other times it works ok for months. You never know when it will fail. Frustrating!

DJI action 3 or 4 are good too. Haven't used them myself, but they're good and perhaps better value for money compared to Gopro. And easier to use.

I almost always use a chest mount for better perspective, but I assume you don't want to carry unnecessary stuff on your body for such a long race. Handlebar is fine imo.

For better sound, use wind muffs (small stickers/dead cats on ALL microphones, there are many mics...) or a "windslayer". Much better than the wind noise reduction function.

Well I have a gravel bike with a rather aggresive posture. I would not mind a chest mount but I think the camera will be pointing to the road rather than in the front. Can the chest mounted camera be adjusted for viewing angle?

Do you use your chest mounted camera on a gravel bike? Also can you adjust the viewing angle?

With chest mounts you need to get the angle correct (that is with single lens cams ie with most cameras. on insta360 for example you can just re-frame).

310k with a chest harness… I wouldn’t. I’d rather go for a bar mount where you also have easy access to the camera. Vibration is not a problem.

Skall du filma hela loppet i realtid? Går det inte att ta en bild vid ett visst intervall så hela rundan blir snabbspolad vid uppspelning?

I thought the same, bar mount is my preference too.

Do you want to film the entire race in real time? Is it not possible to take a picture at a certain interval so that the whole round is fast-forwarded during playback?
Well as far as I know go pros record a video? So as long as I have a battery pack and a biiiiiggg memory card, I should be ok. The video can be edited afterwards to make it time lapse etc.

From GoPro 9 there are a couple of Timelapse and timewarp functions that work very well. Amazing result really. That also saves a ton of space on the memory card as well as battery.

The video will be a sleeping pill, the sense of speed when recording a road bike ride is close to none, so I hardly think that you will watch more than the "highlights". But here's my recommendations:

I would say that you need a GoPro 10 or newer, bar mount, power bank, USB pass-through door (official accessory) and a short cable. A chest mount gives you a better angle but I don't think that the slight better camera angle justifies having to carry the camera for so long.

The pass-through door is only needed if the camera is going to be wet. Also, you should run the camera without battery if you use a power bank, the camera can be overheated and sometimes the camera doesn't realise it got a big power bank connected and dies when the internal battery runs out.

Setup the camera with standard "HyperSmooth" to remove the worst vibrations, the "boost" option crops the image way more and make the footage look even slower.

Record in 1080 or 2.7k to save space on the memory card and minimise the heat build up over time. 4k is no problem in colder weather.

Try your setup before the race.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Any comments on handle mount?

So, I remembered that I do have a Sony RX100 https://www.sony.se/electronics/cyber-shot-kompaktkameror/dsc-rx100 which has been lying unused for a few years, but works fine. I was wondering if I could make use of that camera instead? Has anyone used a standard camera instead of gopros?

Probably not enough stabe, but get out and try. Report back later. ?
Will do, planning to ride this weekend. Unfortunately Amazon delivery is delayed for handlebar mount. Any idea where I can find a handlebar mount in Stockholm? I tried the standard bicycle shops like Cyclotheket, sportson etc. But they dont have any. Much appreciated if you or anyone could suggest me at such short notice.

Edit: This is for a GoPro.

Didn't read the last couple of messages. I see two major problems with that camera:

1) No real stabilization.
2) Camera can overheat, a quick search on Google says 30 minutes, but can be very dependent on weather and temperature.
Thank you for the link. I checked clas ohlson too, but nothing hat suits my needs.
Well i plan to use the camera in photo mode with continuous shooting enabled. It does something like a time lapse. Maybe it wont over heat either. It has been with me for too long and i hardly ever used it so i dont mind if it breaks. Perhaps the camera wont even survive the training ride because of vibrations.

An update: Went riding to Eskilstuna with the rx100 mounted on handlebar along with peice of rubber from discarded tubes to dampen vibrations. The camera worked fine. So it lives to see another day. Actually the only thing that worked smoothly was the camera. I could not manage to reach the destination, the heat was killing me (Ironically i am from India). Managed 80km and gave up when i saw a train station. Not sure if I will finish Vätternrundan but the camera worked (!!!)

Ohh and i recorded a video for 6 hours straight, without a battery. It did not overheat despite the blazing sun. Also the video was to my satisfaction. No vibrations, pretty stable video. Planning to do the same ride again this weekend. Will update with a short video clip.

Another update: Went for another ride with the camera, this time around 160 km. Again the camera came out unscathed. I am really impressed. Next ride will be the 315 km VR. My bike is a diverge comp E5 which comes with future shock system. Maybe that helps. Also I put a peice of tube as a dampner when I mount the camera. Again thoroughly impressed. I do not know how to edit the vide to put a minute long part on this thread, but I will figure it out after VR when I have some time. Ohh, also the video is a bit shaky but not that bad.

Last update I suppose. The camera survived 315 km, with rain wind for the last few hours. So did I, but very much impressed by the camera. Could not record the entire ride because battery bank kept shutting down. But did end up recording last 20 km. The shutter of camera does not close completely but thats maybe because of dust and mud. I will clean it up, but the optics are functioning fine.
