At the LRM meeting in 2019, a new award was created to honor the great contributions of Robert Lepertel to the sport of randonneuring and especially his work with Les Randonneurs Mondiaux to promote randonneuring throughout the world.

(1) General rules

Riders achieve the award by completing four different events as follows:

a) A 1200 km or longer event in each of 4 consecutive calendar years.

b) Eligible events are Paris-Brest-Paris, or any event sanctioned by Les Randonneurs Mondiaux.

c) Not all four events may start in the same country.

d) The first event can be in calendar year 2019 or later.

The first awards under the Challenge Lepertel can be earned in 2022, for riders who complete four events from 2019 to 2022.


(2) COVID-19 modification

As we know, the global pandemic has affected the ability of riders to complete LRM events. Many events were cancelled in 2020 and many more in 2021. The LRM Executive has decided to make a one-time adjustment to the award for the four year period from 2019-2022. Riders who did not complete an LRM event in either or both of the years 2020 and 2021 may substitute events from another year in that period.
To be specific, a rider’s application would include four LRM events in at least two countries

• An LRM event (or Paris-Brest-Paris) in 2019
• An LRM event in 2020 OR another LRM event in 2019, 2021, or 2022
• An LRM event in 2021 OR another LRM event in 2019, 2020, or 2022
• An LRM event in 2022

(3) Procedure

The LRM will handle the Challenge Lepertel award in a manner similar to that used by the ACP for the R5000 and R10000 awards. LRM will accept applications once a year. Because the award can use events any time in the calendar year, LRM will accept the applications in January. (Applications for 2019-2022 will be accepted in January 2023).

Applications will be accepted from LRM country representatives, not directly from riders. Awards will be shipped to the LRM country representatives for distribution to the riders. Payment for the medals will be handled through the ACP/LRM annual invoice. We expect to invoice 8€ per medal unless there are unforeseen increases to the cost of the medals or postage.

An application form will be published to the LRM website in the next few months.


(4) Medal design

Thanks to Ali Holt of the British Columbia Randonneurs in Canada, we have a handsome design for the medal, which can be seen in the attached photo.

Vad är det som du upplever som "red tape" i att en utmärkelse instiftas, att man har regler för denna samt att man gör en engångskorrigering i dessa med tanke på covid-19-epidemin?

Man kan förstås ha åsikter om denna typ av utmärkelser är vettiga/meningsfulla. I sig kan de dock knappast sägas vara "red tape"-artade, givet att wikipedias beskrivning är hyggligt korrekt. Normalreglernas fyra punkter känns för mig rimliga och lättbegripliga. Den tillfälliga korrigeringen har jag inte heller några problem med att förstå.

Jag har aldrig hört talas om denna utmärkelse tidigare men hade inga som helst problem med att läsa texten. Tycker snarast den är bra skriven då den definierar utmärkelsen, beskriver det aktuella undantaget och hur man ansöker om utmärkelsen och gör detta på ett klart och tydligt sätt utan onödiga utsvävningar.

Att det är knastertorrt har jag inga problem med. Mycket hellre det än att det är flufformuleringar som möjliggör feltolkningar.

Sen förstår jag fortfarande inte vad det "red tape"-artade består i. Som jag förstår begreppet krävs onödig byråkrati som bidrar till ineffektivitet. Detta ser jag inte i detta fall.
