Public transport options for Stockholm to Mora

Hello!

I'm doing Cykelvasan this August and wondering how you all handle getting to Mora with your bike? I'm traveling from Stockholm and would prefer not to drive.

I've looked into SJ but it seems like you have to dismantle you're bike and I haven't done that before.

Anyone have tips or experience with this?
- Regional trains with a bike – is there an option?
- Does Flixbus allow bikes – as far I can see there doesnt seem like an option
- Carpooling with other participants?
- Any other solutions

Do you really have to dismatle the bike on SJ trains? Never had my bike on the train but as far as I know the issue they have is "dirt" so completely covering the bike makes it OK to bring on the train. Removing the front wheel maybe to make it easier to carry?

Från Gävle kan du åka Tåg i Bergslagen till Borlänge för att byta tåg där och hoppa på ytterligare ett tåg från Tåg i Bergslagen med slutstation Mora.
Det finns dock bara 2 st cykelplatser per tåg på de flesta avgångarna. Några turer mellan Borlänge - Mora har 6 st cykelplatser.
Dessa går inte att boka, endast mån av plats.

Någon annan vet kanske om det går ett tåg mellan Stockholm och Gävle där man får ta med sig cykeln?

Har sett en som åkt TiB med cykeln lätt demonterad i en tygpåse för att vara säker på att få med sig cykeln hela vägen från Alingsås. Hade bara sänkt sadelstolpen i botten och tagit av framhjulet och fäst det på sidan av cykelns ram.

I have taken my bicycle on the train Stockholm-Gävle. Commuter rail to Uppsala from Stockholm and then Upptåget (nowadays Mälartåg) to Gävle. I think the latter is still possible and the former is possible as long as you don’t board the train at Stockholm City and stay away from weekday rush hours.

You can take Mälartåg Stockholm-Uppsala, then Mälartåg again Uppsala-Sala and last Tåg i Bergslagen Sala-Mora. This way you can ride with your bike assembled. Thie risk is that others have the same idea and the trains only takes a few bikes and you cannot pre-book.

SJ only allows bikes disassebled and packaged.

To be a cyclist in sweden you need a car...

Yes, if you can't get your hands on a really large box.

Removing front wheel, strapping it to the frame and dropping the seat is probably all it takes.

Har gjort så här en gång när jag behövde ta SJ tåg. Annars är dom tidigare rekommendationer med Mälartåg & Tåg i Bergslagen bra alternativ då man inte behöver montera ner, dock väldigt begränsat med cykelplatser på den sistnämnda. Hade inte chansat med tight tidsmarginal.

Man ska nog inte chansa på att det finns lediga cykelplatser på tåget just de dagarna som Cykelvasan går…? Kan ju hända att det är ett par andra som också ska ta sig till Dalarna med cykel då.

Best option is probably SJ and a soft bag for the bike. It doesn't have to be anything fancy at all - I made a bag that takes a bike (road bike, but still) out of unpadded nylon - it's smaller than a water bottle when folded. Some others have used garbage bags.

A *fun* way could be taking Snälltåget night train to Östersund, and then Inlandsbanan to Mora. The Snälltåget train to Jämtland, as well as Inlandsbanan, allows fully assembled bikes and has bookable spaces.

Thanks for the advice and help seems like the best option is to get a bag and dismantle :) Hopefully there's easier transportation options from Mora to Sälen

From Mora to Sälen you can put the bike on a truck and yourself on a buss. The tickets can be bought on Vasaloppets web page.
I've used it twice and it is great
