Road cycling in Gothenberg
Hello. I will be visiting Gothenberg next week and would like to bring my road bike to continue my training. I will be staying near the university.

Can anyone recommend an area close to the university where I can do 10-20 minute intervals without stopping?

Also, can you recommend longer routes (100-150km) for the weekend?

Overall, is the riding (and weather) good enough for me to go to the trouble of traveling with my bike?

Almost forgot, can you recommend a good shop near the university for road cycling?

Thanks very much and sorry to ask in English and even sorrier to ask about road cyling on an MTB forum!

Hey n welcome to the forum!

Others will fill in with good info about where to ride etc. I'm not familiar with gothenburg and its riding that well myself unfortunately.

And don't worry about this being an mtbforum, its a popular subject to bicker about around here allrdy .)

Enjoy the stay in Sweden!

Cheers
B

The University of Gothenburg have several buildings scattered through out the city, so you should probably be more specific and maybe just give us an adress ;)

Regarding a nearby bike shop (as it's in the city) i'd recommend that you check out CykelCity. They're located at Övre Husargatan 4. It's not downtown but it's pretty close. Website: http://www.cykelcity.se/

Thanks. I didn't realize that the university was spread out. I will be staying at Address: Guldhedstorget 1. I hope that's enough of an address. I believe it is university-owned housing for guests.

Welcome to Happy :-)

When I lived In Gothenburg, I booked a lot between road 27 and E22 to the east. There are quite a few nice smaller roads there and the area is basically a ridge, so you get some nice climbs as well. If you want to go south, the area around the lake lygnern is really nice as well.

Regarding bike shops, there are cykelcity and bikeplace quite close to you and sportspec a bit further away. There are also some Sportson stores with some road bikes around town.

The weather should be decently warm, but Gothenburg is not the most sunny place, so bring rain gear.;-)

I'd ride down to linneplatsen/Slottskogen and start south on Säröbanan right by the all the way to Särö and use that as warmup since it's cyclepath. 20km perhaps and pretty scenic. Then to Kungsbacka north via Grönninge and out by Gåsaholms-something to Fjärås, up the "Bräcka" the roads are nice and not very heavy with traffic.

The either north of Lygnern and back north (these roads I dont know too well) or by Rossared to Anneberg and then to the Hällingsjö via Älvsåkersvägen (was good but I haven't ridden it the last ten years or so) and either Benareby or Eskilsby north - then someone else will have to take over :)

Probably a 150km loop, or at least 100km.

Thank you for the very helpful suggestions. It looks like I will be able to do a long ride on Sunday in Lund as well. Any suggestions for routes in Lund?

For example Lund-Södra Sandby-Torna Hällestad-Veberöd-Harlösa-Löberöd-Gårdstånga-Lund-something.

Basically you can't go wrong around Lund, nice small paved roads everywhere. :-)

I made a quick map-up to check the distance. If you go by Eskilsby and then up to Gamla Boråsvägen by Gunnebo Slott (slott = castle) you have a 120km trip. If you want longer take the lap around Lygnern.

Funny think about "burg" and "berg". I went with "burg", as approrpiate, for quite a while and then I seem to remember that google asked me several times whether I really meant "berg". And of course, who am I to disagree with THE GOOGLE. So I shifted, apparently incorrectly, to "berg". Please excuse my silly Americanism.

I've just arrived in lovely Lund and after giving a talk at the university in a few minutes, I'll put my coupler bike together and begin to explore. Too bad that in coming from Madrid I mostly brought short-sleeved kit!

Unacceptable! I don't go to new york and call it "The big Mango". :-)

The city of Gothenburg used to be a borg (fortress?), but it has never been a berg(mountain)! Alltough Patrick Sjöberg is a native of Gothenburg, and Björn Borg is not.

There are a lot of remains from "the old borg"-days that you can have a look at once you get here.
If you walk along what used to be the moat you can still see it is clearly shaped in an arrow-like formation where there used to be bastions. There are also two sconces (with a great view) they where onced connected to the borg with a caponier, the streetname "Kaponjärgatan" is a reminder of this!

Welcome !

There are two bikeshops on the square Clemenstorget just in front of the railway station if you are in urgent need of clothing. ;-)

I had a wonderful time in Lund and got in two good rides. The first was solo out to Landskrona and back. I'm sure I just misspelled that in some terrible way. Interesting castle out there, by the way.

The second ride was much more fun. I went with a group of pretty fast guys and they guided us to what I believe are the only hills for hundreds of kms around. The wind was a constant 30kph or higher and I felt like I was fighting it until someone remarked that they were glad there was zero wind. Apparently, you need 50kph+ on Skarne to qualify.

I'm in Gothenburg now and despite the "burg", it is hilly and could be a "berg". I'm looking forward to trying some of the rides suggested here. And if anyone has group ride recommendations for mid-week outings, please let me know. That would be a real treat.

One of my favourite 15-20min segment/road is Härskogsvägen. Very hilly road with alot of flow both directions.

Feels almost like riding a motorcycle even tho you are going full gas, downhill before all corners :)
