tires for gravel bike
Hey I am looking to buy some tires and was recommended the GP 5000 for a faster ride on my gravel bike.

Can you guys suggest where to find the GP5000 tires in size 32? I can only find sizes like 28x1.0 for example on bikester. I'm not sure what that sizing means.

And would that be a recommended size for my gx pro 20? I hear that the wider size the better for a smoother ride.

I have WTB Riddler 700x37C Comp on the bike now, I wonder would 37c be the size to try and get?

28x1.0 would mean 28 inch wheel size and 1 inch wide tire. This is however not a standardized format to specify tire size. Further down in the detailed specs the size in ERTRO format is given as 25-622. That means 25 mm wide and with a 622 mm rim size (which in everyday speech is referred to as 28 inch).

Your current tires would be ERTRO 37-622*. The GP5000 tire your looking at is 12 mm less wide.
The GP5000 tire, especially at a width like 25 mm, is primarily a road tire. It will almost certainly make your bike faster on asphalt but will perform less well on gravel. Both due to it's narrow width and it's lack of thread pattern. If you plan on riding mostly road, this is a good tire.

GP5000 also appears to come in 30-622 and 32x622:

If you still plan to ride a lot of gravel I'd probably suggest looking for a different tire. Something semi-slick perhaps.

* There are a few ways to express tire size. ERTRO is a well used standard which specifies size in mm. You can also find tire size as 700Cx25 (for example) which is the same as 25-622.

Thank you for the info, it makes more sense now.

I'm wanting to ride mainly on asphalt with the gp5000, and switch to my other tires when going on trails. Would the 32x622 be the largest available then?

Or would you recommend some alternative like semi-slick? Sorry for all the questions, I'm a complete noob to bike tires.

When it comes to slicks and road tires I'm mostly a noob myself. 32 mm does seem to be the widest version*
I run 38 mm Gravel Kin SS as I ride a fair amount of both gravel and asphalt in my regular rides. Also, I don't have two wheel sets and changing tires is too much work.

But if I did have two wheel sets I might put slicks like GP5000 on one set for pure road rides. In that case I would probably go for 28 or 30 mm. I don't have any particular reason, it just feels reasonable.

The 28 mm wide GP5000 is probably the best all-round road tyre in existence. It’s brilliant everywhere. Also handles light gravel and trails decently as long as it’s dry.

Thanks for the review. I am going to buy them, but what inner tubes would you suggest for the 32-622? Does it matter the tires say tubeless, I can still put an inner tube in there?

I don't want to go tubeless, it seems like too much work to set it up.

I also found the foldable gp5000 https://www.bikester.se/continental-grandprix-5000-folding-tyre-28x125-M152298.html?vgid=G908013

Would you suggest that one or the tubeless?

If you're not going tubeless, get the foldable ones, they're much easier to deal with. I use Conti's Race 28 tubes and Schwalbe's 18c-28c-tubes. Haven't noticed any difference between them other than the Schwalbe's being a little smaller when rolled up (i.e. in my back pocket).

Thank you so much for the great info! I'll grab the foldable ones. Nice to see they are also cheaper. :)

One last question, I have these rims https://www.wtb.com/collections/rims/products/kom-light-i21 but I don't know which innertube valve sizing to choose.

Either 42,60, or 80mm when I'm buying these: https://www.bikester.se/continental-race-28-slang-28-tum-latt-M190322.html?cgid=b109

I have similar rims and always go with 60 mm, mainly because I want a substantial stem to stick out so I don't have to faff around with it when I'm pumping. The 42 will work too, but I just find them too short for my liking.

I have the same bike but I want to go with tubeless ones. Is that possible since I saw that you have to look for tubeless ready rims?

My intention is to go on asphalt the whole summer and then change the tires to stock tire when the winter is coming. Is that a bad idea?
