Winter snow ice best bike choise
Hi people ! I put winter tyres to my damcykel 3 gears but i get tired to go to work and is not fun.
I am thinking to use my other bicykles. I am thinking to use my 29 mountain bike. Should i put winter tyres only front or it is ok without dubbdäck.thanks

Thanks.Should i invest studded tyres on my 29 mountain bike or my nisinki all road cykelcross ? My job is 3.5 kilometers far from h8m but i get tyred with my dam cykel with Nokia hakapelita tyres .

You are right man . I can do 80klm with my racing bicykle on my day off easy but in the morning at 7 o klock trying to go to work with a damcykel and ice is really slow and tyred for me . I need a bicykle to put less effort.

If you have the hakkapeliitta a10 there is not much to be had. Schwallbe maraton winter might be better rolling, but not noticable over 3.5 km. 3.5km should be like a 10-15 mintues topps.

With snow is more than 15 minutes and it is 3 klm up hill . Should my 29 mountain bike will be goid without dubbdäck? Or just put dubbdäck front only?

I don't know where you live, so I don't know what kind of winter you have. I'm in Gothenburg, and this year I'm running a Conti Top Contact Winter in the front (a studless winter tyre) and a regular Shwalbe Marathon (not studded) in the back. Works great for me, but I'm comfortable riding on slippery roads. It is quite dependant on both where you live, but also your skill.

What kind of bicycles you have ? I live in Uppsala! When the snow gets soft and like mud gets annoying and the bicykle goes right and left

I ride a single speed bike with studded tyres 8km single way to work. It can take slightly longer time to get to work compared to summer conditions, but it is fine.

Soft muddy snow (snömodd) is one of the most annoying conditions. Studs don't help when it's soft and not icy. What works best depends on how much snow there is. If the layer is not too thick, narrow tires are better as they can go through the snow and reach the asfalt. If the layer is thick, wide MTB tires with big knobs are good. I was very happy with my 2,6" Specialized Butcher on the front in the deep snow mess on the streets of Stockholm early last week. Just try your mountainbike and see if you like it.

Get more bikes. There are no tires who can manage all kinds of wintery surfaces. A fatbike is good at snow. Worthless on ice. Sometimes you want/need studs, sometimes not.

Nice fun ! What size tyres? Which brand?

Who are you asking? Me? Which tires? I already mentioned my Specialized Butcher 2,6". My winter commuter bike currently runs Schwalbe Marathon Almotion in 40 mm width. But that's a compromise geared towards the many more rainy days above zero in Stockholm winter than the few days where there is muddy snow. With that said, it's better than the other compromise tires I have tried.

I livev in Uppsala and I'm currently riding my 26" MTB with 2" studded tires (Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus). Actually worthless at the moment in the loose snow which occurs on roads that are not properly cleaned. Fine on icy roads and packed snow though.

P.S.
Where in Uppsala do you ride 3km uphill? ?

?

Uppsala is infamous (like a lot of Swedish cities) for bike-thefts. Don't park a nice bike i supervised, the ladies bike sounds crappy enough.
The snow situation right now is quite challenging for anybody, parts of most commuters' ride are deep flour-snow, other parts are "salt-sweeped", wet tarmac.
All dedicated winter tyres (except edit: Schwalbe isp) are constructed with low siped thread patterns, not good for deep loose snow, (isp sucks at everything but deep loose snow or hard ice).
If theft risk is low, choose mtb when there is mostly deep loose snow, and the ladies bike with "normal" winter tyres, studded or not, the other days.
(All this because I wanted to react to the sentence about uphills in Uppsala.)

Haha you are so right guys.
My nokian dupped tyres are really good but in compination with my dam cykel makes me to put much effort to go upphill to the hospital that i work.
If i had the winter tyres on my merida hybrid would be faster .
I want to try my mountain bike with no stub tyrres and 3 locks of course when i leave it outside.
Maybe i will buy winter tyres on my Nisiski touring bicykle all road.
I think it can take 30 or 32 widthwintet tyres . That is good fast cykle with racing handlbar and cykelkorg .
My nokia 40 with tyres are really good but makes the dam cykel langsam on a spoiled cyklist like me that i have racing bike 8 kilos and mopeds
Any tips for 30 , 32 width tyres compare to 40 width winter tyres ?

Should my 29 mountain bike will be goid without dubbdäck? Or just put dubbdäck front only?
If snow's the problem then a MTB would work great. It's only when the roads are covered in ice you need studded tyres. Front only would probably be just fine if it's more like packed snow or patchy ice, but I would use front and rear just to be sure.

The thing is that almost always in Uppsala or stockholm every almost 200meters the terrain changes from snow to muddy snow and then ice

I went out for ride with my mountain bike with No dubbdäck and it was really good and good grip . Espesially the front tyre was not slipery at all . I teally press it much to be slipery and nothing . Some tecomend 2 dubbdäck or 1 dubbdäck for winter and mountain bike but it was not slipery at all with no dubbdäck........ really more fun to drive and better control than my winter tyres dam cykel. I think the mountains bike handlbar are made for those contitions , even on muddy snow was even better .

Yes, wide handlebars help a lot in slippery conditions. I think an MTB is ideal in snowmess, but I don't want to park a nice MTB on the street. Also salty snowmess is bad for the drivetrain.

Yes the bad with mountain bike is that you dont have korg and you put everything on your back bag . I will put 3 locks and park it safe too. But how often we have to wash it cause of the salt ?

so you have obvious everyday benefits with the ladies bike. mudguards, rack and maybe a front basket. biggest problem with them is theft risk. it has been reported 85 percent are bikes of this type.

may i repeat this easy and cheap tweak? you get the lower gears you wish for at around 100 sek. throw in a new chain with plated or stainless steel side plates while you are at it. then you can use hazzle-free always clean wax lube without rust forming.
put bigger cog on the rear hub of the ladies' bike already fitted with studded tyres?

but if you really want to tweak that bike, get a nexus7 rear hub or wheel. bombproof function without maintenance, for decades. just see to that the rear cog is big enough to get the low gears you want.

Looking for winter tyres from my 29 jhul mountain bike , i got confused cause the size is 622 x 57.
But also 28 hjul tyre bicykles have 622 x 47
Does that mean that i can put a 28 hjul winter tyre on my 29 hjul bike something like 622 x 47 or 622 x 50 ?

Winter snow ice best bike choise
My mountain bike without dubbdäck is really eating any kind of snowing uppsala road . I havent tested on much distance ice yet. But the think that i feel stressed to lock it out even with 3 locks and i also have to carry the locks on my bag make me to have to find another winter bicykle..... any recomedations.

Every inch and mm measurement you listed fits on the same rim, so yes.

Regarding cheap winter bike, this one is hard to beat. The cheaper model is on sale for ~2500SEK now and then and they take MTB tyres. I have used Ice Spikers on mine.

There's a long thread about it here - use Google translate or something like that.
