Do you know what are the differences between Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro MTB tire
Evolution and Performance versions?
I did not know all respects,
but I took the matter clear, and
here I'll make you this summary video on the subject.
Hi there!
This Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro is a true legend
when it comes to studded mountain bike tires.
I also have used these as long as
I have ridden MTB through the winter.
The tire is currently available
in two versions: Performance and Evolution
and Evolution is clearly more expensive.
If you find the traditional Performance model
at 60-70 €
Evolution pays close to 100 €.
Let's see today why -
what differences these tires really have?
The first difference comes from the basic structure of the tire.
Namely, when you go to the store to pick up the tire,
Performance tire is sold like this
and Evolution tire like this.
So, Evolution tire is a folding model, and
Performance is more traditional
wire bead model.
When this Evolution tire is taken
out from its box
we get to the next one.
This tire feels elastic
in your hand
when this traditional model is very rigid
such a bounce back material.
That is, these have different levels of puncture protection.
This traditional tire has so-called
RaceGuard which is quite a tough kevlar puncture protection
and the other one has so-called LiteSkin which is thinner.
But I would say that it has no substantial difference
in this case, when we talk about
rough MTB tires anyhow.
The puncture resistance rarely becomes a problem,
they will manage quite well also with crushed stone chips on the road.
Well, this structural difference leads us to
some new things,
namely this new Evolution tire
is better rolling than the old one
because of this structure.
None of these are good rolling tires
as you can conclude from its outlook.
But compared to the old one,
it is a bit better.
And another thing about the structure is
that the newer tire is lighter.
Weighs still 890 grams,
but the old tire weights 1170 g in 29” size.
So, big weights we are talking about anyway,
this is not light either.
But - this structure makes it possible
that you can use it tubeless
and then we are already talking on substantial weight difference.
And there is still one difference that I noticed just recently.
So, this traditional performance tire has
flat tip steel spikes
and this more recent version the Evolution model
has pointy aluminum spikes.
Aluminium spike sounds bad, but
at least in the case of Schwalbe, it means that
the spike body is made of aluminum but that the heart and the tip
is the same stuff as in the steel spike.
So don’t worry,
probably they both work just as well.
At least they do not report any difference in the grip.
So, the reason behind using aluminum
is again getting lighter.
This 29 "tire has
more than 400 spikes per tire, so one gram difference
or even part of it begins to matter.
Those were the most essential differences I found
between these tires
otherwise these are the same tires
made from the same rubber compound
in fact, also the spike patterning is just the same
even if it looks different here
but it is because they have a bit different shape.
This was the theory part,
we return to the practice later in the winter
when I ride also these Evolution tires.
Thank you for watching!
If you have experiences
on Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tires
please write them to the video comments.
Ride safely, see you -
Goodbye!
And when you install the new studded tires
before you start the real MTB rides with them
please remember to ride first on asphalt.
By doing this, the studs settle in the correct position
and then also remain there better.
