My bike differs from a standard bicycle (for example: a tandem bike, electric bike, or Christiania bike, Fatbike). What terms apply?
General information
The bicycle must be hung on the hooks in the cargo space, i.e. the maximum length can be 175 cm. Max tire diameter 5 cm.
Tandem bikes
As a rule, tandem bikes may not be brought on board trains.
Two exceptions apply: Flåm Line (hand in your bike at Flåm as early as possible so that it can be shipped on an earlier-departing train) and the Bergen line, which has its own departures with bicycle carriages in the summer. You pay only for a single bicycle ticket per tandem bike.
Electric bikes
The same terms as apply as to regular bikes.
Lithium-ion batteries must be removed from the bicycle and carried in your hand luggage, and may not be charged on board our trains.
The electric bike must be clearly marked with the manufacturer's name, type designation and manufacturing number. The marking must be clearly visible.
Christiania bikes/cargo bikes
Not permitted on board our trains.
Handcycles
The Bergen Line: It is possible to bring a handcycle on the Bergen Line on selected daily departures in the period from mid-June to mid-September. Space must be booked in advance by contacting customer service. The price is the same as for other bicycles.
The Flåm Railway: Due to the small area in the goods room, it is only possible to transport handcycles by special agreement. Contact customer service at Flåmsbana at
flaamsbana@visitflam.com to inquire. The price is the same as for other bicycles.
Foldable bikes
You may bring a foldable bike as carry-on luggage at no extra charge. However, the folded-up bike must be folded and be placed so that it does not get in the way of other customers or obstructs free passage in and between carriages. It must be placed or wrapped so that oil and dirt from wheels and chains do not damage seats, train interiors, or passengers’ clothing, luggage, or other belongings.
Bikes in travel cases
Can be brought on board if they comply with general luggage rules and do not occupy excessive space. Bicycle travel cases vary greatly in size. Most bicycle cases are too large to fit on train luggage shelves or overhead racks and would block free passage through aisles — and you are not allowed to bring such bike travel cases on board.
Scooters
Scooters and small bikes for children under school age, are handled as ordinary luggage and may be brought on board at no extra charge.
Scooters may be brought on board if they do not hinder the conductor and other passengers. Scooters should not be placed on overhead luggage racks. They must be placed and packaged so that oil and dirt from wheels do not damage seats, furnishings on the train or other travellers’ clothing or luggage. Scooters that fail to meet the above conditions must be handled the same as “personal transporters” such as Segways and the like (see below).
Four-wheeled scooters that are essential to disabled persons may be brought on board our trains that require seat reservations on the same terms as regular bikes, but may have to be folded. On trains that do not require seat reservations, our conductor will decide whether such scooters are allowed on board.
Lithium-ion batteries used in electrically-powered scooters and the like may not be charged on board Vy trains.
Mopeds and motorbikes
May not be brought on board our trains. This rule also applies to electric mopeds, scooters, and electric scooters.
Personal transporters (Segways and the like)
Generally, personal transporters, such as a Segway, are not permitted on board our trains for safety reasons. In rare instances, it may be possible to ship your personal transporter as special luggage on some regional trains that have a designated freight compartment. Contact us well in advance of your departure date if you would like us to find out whether we will be able to carry your personal transporter on board.
Lithium-ion batteries used in electrically powered bikes and other small electric vehicles may not be charged on board our trains.
