A: "Regarding the 24" wheel design, it's not really a matter of better or worse, just a different method of reaching an end result. There are several reasons we did it this way. We designed the Big Hit frame to be a versatile chassis, capable of being turned into a full-fledged DH bike, or a burly free-ride bike, with the same frame design (in some cases different links). To that end, we wanted the design to be capable of running a triple ring setup and keep the chainline fairly normal. To run a triple ring setup and keep the chainstay length short and nimble, as well as ensure that the tire would clear the seat pod/saddle area, a 24" wheel is a very good option. As technology advances, it may be that we find that we can achieve the same result with a 26" wheel, so by no means are we stating that it's the best way to achieve the results we're looking for, but it does work very well.
The typical advantages of a 24" rear wheel are that it accelerates well, handles quickly at slower speeds (handles better in singletrack), offers a lot of suspension travel (depending on the link) without contact with the frame or
saddle, offers a very strong wheel, and lots of versatility. On the downside, theoretically, a smaller wheel will not get over large obstacles as easily, and decelerate quicker. Also, availability of tires and rims are more limited. The
last one is a more objective fact, the others (positive or negative) are more subjective. The reality is that it comes down to whether or not you like the feel. Some people love 24" wheels, others have no interest. Much is a matter of
perception, some people are not open to it at all. Considering the success of the model for us over the past few years, I would have to say that the design is sound and strong. We've had Brett Tippie freeriding the design and abusing it
with great success. In other words, it can handle a heck of a pounding, and offer confidence and control. Is it better than a 26" wheel design? I don't think so. Just different. Call it personal preference."
