Advice for riding around Nackareservatet

Hej, I'm visiting Stockholm from Vancouver (Canada) and would like to do some riding here. Giving where I am staying and available time, I was thinking about going to the area here (I think it's called Nackareservatet):

I welcome advice about riding in there, like "best" trail or routes, things to watch out for, and overall what to expect.

Also particular question I have is: what is the definition of red trails in this area? For instance, does it mean a double black or something between a blue and a black? I've heard different places use the red coding differently.

Most probably I'll be renting a hard-tail. (Advice on places to rent bikes are also welcome!)

Hi, and welcome to Stockholm! Where exactly are you staying, and between which dates? I'm sure you can find someone who'd give you a tour if you'd like to.

The trails in this area are quite flat, with some shorter climbs/descents. They are quite technical and rocky, and all trails are natural (i.e. not built).

Welcome to Sweden! Here, trails are normally graded in the order Green (easy) Blue (still quite easy) Red (not so easy) and Black (not easy at all)

Most blue and red trails are worth exploring.
Blå Spåret east and Gröna Spåret back west.

Hi there, and welcome to Stockholm.

The grading is based on the UK grading. Or we've used the same colours anyway. So in summary it's
Green (IMBA, UK: Easy/Green Circle)
Trails with no or nearly no obstacles or challenges. Usually dirt and gravel.

Blue (IMBA, UK: Intermediate/Blue Square)
Some obstacles and challenges, but any rider with basic mountain biking skills will be able to ride these trails.

Red (IMBA: Very Difficult/Black Diamond, UK: Difficult/Red Triangle)
Prevelent obstacles and challenges. Rocks, roots, rock slabs, steep sections, drops. Most will be rollable though.

Black (IMBA: Extremely Difficult/Dbl Black Diamond, UK: Severe/Black Diamond )
As Red but with bigger obstacles and steeper sections. More of the challenges will not be rollable.

We do not have any longer steeper sections, nor do we have any built trails or stunts. But most beginner and avarage riders still find most of the trails challenging. But you'd be fine, if you're used to the Shore.

While you're here make sure to check out the Tisdagsrajd. A group ride every Tuesday at 6.30 pm from the parking at Hammarbybacken. In the summertime the number of participants can be as many as 50 riders or more.

Also the LBS Cykloteket has their rides from Hellasgården at Thursday evening (also at 6.30 I think) I'm not sure they're doing them at the moment. So check their Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/458484917831620/

It's a good area to ride, and stretches for several miles as you can see if you follow the trails, for example toward the coast like the 'green' and 'blue' trails (gröna spåret / blå spåret). I ride there at least once a week with a bunch of friends.

Don't confuse the trail markings with difficulty grading. There are lots of color splotches and stuff marking the trails out there, but no grading markers at all.

There are a lot of trails between Hammarbybacken and Hellasgården, I think "Fem Svåra" is the easiest one to navigate without constantly checking which way to go: https://www.trailforks.com/trails/fem-svara/

"Gula Spåret" (north to south) is a fun challenging trail with a nice view over the lake Källtorpssjön, with some descent at the end: https://www.trailforks.com/trails/gula-sparet-134513/

The most well known and classic ride is Gröna spåret combined with Blå spåret to and back from Saltsjöbaden. 18 km Technical riding often takes 3-4 hours with stops. There are cafés and restaurants in both ends. It includes some of the nices trail segments in the forrest.

I'm confident now that it's going to be a great chance for a ride :)
There is some consensus on key trails and good options for a pushing a bit more if needed Nice to also know about the places to eat at the end.

To share back and answer questions:
* if you go to Canada, notice that red trails there are considered "double black". As some of you referred here as 'severe black' with big obstacles, technical features that are can't be rolled down or avoided
* I'm here for 1 week for work (I'm lucky enough to come to Stockholm a couple of times per year). I'm aiming for this Sunday, and if possible trying to piggyback some ride during the evenings after working hours. But since I didn't bring my bike, I have to rent one and store hours is a limiting factor for evenings. I haven't dared to pack my bike on a plane, that's a whole another thread. But if anyone is willing to lend me a 15.5 frame (S), 26 to 27.5'' wheels, I'll buy you beer after the ride :)
