Sörmlandsleden, what are stages 15.1-20 like?
Once again Mtbcf from Helsinki is coming Stockholm. And the question remains the same: What to ride this year? The previous parts have been 1-6.1, 9-13.1 and 15-12.1. Now I'm kinda interested of 15.1-20. What's that like, any pics? 9-13.1 and 15-12.1 were just the stuff I'm looking for, so hard stuff isn't a problem.
If trail is good main issue is the transportation.

Still no info on the stages. I know that someone here knows what they are like, so please answer. We're coming there on next friday so this is kinda urgent.

I hiked parts of these trail about ten years ago. I remember thinking they would be nice MTB-trails. But that is, as I said, ten years ago...

Its very like the other parts you discribed above.

I don't have personal experience, but judging from the info on http://www.sormlandsleden.se/ it doesn't look to hard. But it's quite long.

Don't miss "Bottallen" on stage 18. People used to drag sick people through the roots of a tree to cure them. I wonder if it helps on "sick" bike parts? Stage 18 is the only stage where some "demanding sections" are mentioned.

1 km into stage 20 you pass through "the Gates of Hell"!

Have U tried Lunsen yet? Offers some of the best singletrack in Sweden.

Thats about sums it up what I thought about it. Good singletrack but a lot of bushes, branches and stuff witch makes the trail narrow.

Lunsen is a good alternetive! Go there Lare, you wont be disepointed.

You will find descriptions of most trails on http://www.lowdin.nu/Mtbruntuppsala/English.html please read what goes for linking, third paragraph, on http://www.lowdin.nu/linkpolicy.htm in case you like to link on to somewhere. I´m very particular about that, as we want to maintain a good relationship with others that have a stake in Lunsen.

There is a kind of ride report thread, from our last happyride in Lunsen, on http://happymtb.org/forum/read.php/1/846248/page=1 with photos and two movies, the second movie is at the bottom http://happymtb.org/forum/read.php/1/846248/page=3 It was shot that very day.

If you need a bit of guiding or like company, try the thread Onsdagcykling i Uppsala http://happymtb.org/forum/read.php/1/203298/page=77, some locals are likely to be helpful. Don´t mind that it says "Wednesdaybiking". Uppsala has its own calendar, sanctioned and blessed by the archbishop, and every day is Wednesday ;)

That Lunsen sounds interesting. Can you go there by train from Stockholm? Are the trails easy to follow, I noticed some marking spots in the trees.

Yes, and no, our state government railway system hates bikes, and has as a gereral policy to make life hard for cyclists, so you have to camoflage the bikes if you take the train to Uppsala. On the other hand you can go by the commuter train to Märsta and then bike to Lunsen it is about 20 - 25 km.

Yes, it is wilderness area with designated trails. One is only allowed to ride on the trails and there are local rules, quintessentially, one should be sweet and cuddly to pedestrians, mushroompickers, hunters, equestrians, dog walkers, scouts, etc, taking it easy and giving way to them.

Well, actually you can go by train bringing your bike with you from Stockholm
to Uppsala but you have to change train at UpplandsVäsby.

You can go by commuter train (pendeltåg) from Stockholm (Karlberg) to UpplandsVäsby
and then change to Upptåget which takes you from UpplandsVäsby to Uppsala.

But Upptåget don't have very many departures from UpplandsVäsby to Uppsala,
in weekends there are even fewer departures with Upptåget.

And only 2 bikes per depature is allowed on Upptåget, also there is a 40 SEK fee
for each bike on Upptåget.

So if your group is large then Upptåget probably isn't a good alternative.

Or go by the commuter train to Märsta, there are plenty of them and then ride on road to Forsby (cut and paste http://hitta.se/Route.aspx#6613810;1615952;M%E4rsta;;Sigtuna;|6619960;1613016;Forsby;;Knivsta;) it is only 8 km, and then hit singletrack from Forsbyån. Then you follow Upplandsleden north and it will take you to and through Lunsen to Flottsund. It is clerly marked all the way. You will find a map here http://upplandsstiftelsen.se/pages/documents/pdf/Uppl_leden_v8_low_211.pdf on page 7.

Another option is to bike quickly on road to Nyvallen from Märsta, (cut and paste http://hitta.se/Route.aspx#6613810;1615952;M%E4rsta;;Sigtuna;|6626965;1607420;Nyvallen;;Knivsta;) it is about 20 km, which will give you more time in Lunsen where the best trails are.

Upplandsleden is a bit like Sörmlandsleden (same idea) but in Uppland, the county north of Stockholm. From Forsbyån, you will have some bits of nice singletrack and some bits on really small roads, until you reach Lunsen by Nyvallen. From Nyvallen it is pure fun all the way to Flottsund. Se trails 11 and 2 in MTB around Uppsala. Please not that they have partially changed the route between Alsike Prästgård and Nyvallen. But it is well marked so it should not be a problem to find.

If you are not too exhausted by the time you reach Flottsund you can bet on trail 3 through northern Lunsen. Great fun too!

We're staying in Stockholm for three days. We could go to Lunsen on friday and try to reach 15.1-20 on saturday (if we get a ride there and back fixed). Sunday is reseved for Solsidan. Because 20km of roadbiking before trails is murder for us, train to Uppsala sounds intersesting. On fri it goes every 30min and I can live with that.

There is three of us. Remaining 30 of us are heading somewhere else.

From Uppsala there is 7-8 km on road, you will do 20 km from Märsta in less than an hour if you got rather heavy rigs.

> On fri it goes every 30min and I can live with that.

But do those trains take bikes? On the commutertrains there is no sweat to bring a bike but on the main trains it is a major hassle. On SJ, i.e., Statens Järnvägar, people disguise their bikes by hiding them in plastic trunks etc.

When are you coming? Perhaps some friendly people can give you a ride from Märsta?

Our boat is arrives to Vikingline Terminal at 9.40. Usually bikes get out first, and then we move to Odenplan to our hotel. After we have left luggage there we'll head for train. I guess we could be at Märsta before 12.

How do we find the trail from Forsby? Lantmateriet didn't show any paths starting from there. Is it impossible to miss it if we just find ourselves to Forsby?

Yes, if you go to Forsby bridge over the Forsby river (rather a brook) there should be a well marked trail that leads to Lunsen, organge markings, it goes on trails and on rarely used roads. It begins at the bridge. The trail was marked out last year so it may not yet be on Lantmäteriets maps. You will see how it goes on http://upplandsstiftelsen.se/pages/documents/pdf/Uppl_leden_v8_low_211.pdf page 7.

You will find Lunsen just really worthwhile.

I did meet about 30 MTBers close to the central station around 6 PM yesterday (friday). I suppose it was you.

Sörmlandsleden, what are stages 15.1-20 like?
You saw our large group but not me. I was with only one friend. But we did meet some local bikers in various places. Anyone who saw me also heard my bike. My Specializeds fork is kinda noisy.

On friday we wen't to Lunsen as was suggested. Train got us to Märsta and from there we biked to Knivsta. The directions were good and it was easy to find the trails. I think we biked almost all the marked trails and they all were good. We finally left Lunsen from Sävjä and got our selves to Uppsala. From there to UpplandsVäsby and Stockholm.

On saturday we biked to Gömmaren naturreservat. There we did the 10km round which was suberb. After that we fueled some kebab in Huddinge and headed to Sörmlandsleden. We followed it back to Sholm.

On sunday we did some riding near Sholm and followed the blue track to Solsidan. I guess the way back was green? via the stone pile and the Two Towers. After saturdays riding pedaling wasn't too smooth. I tought my legs had turned into concrete.
