The higher speed associated with wider tires is not due to the slightly larger wheel diameter. While a wider tire does increase the overall wheel diameter by a few millimeters, the effect on the distance traveled per wheel revolution is extremely small—typically well below 1%. In real-world riding, this difference is negligible.
The main reason wider tires can be faster is that they generally have lower rolling resistance when used at the appropriate pressure. This is because:

• They deform less as they roll over the road surface.
• They absorb road imperfections more effectively, reducing energy lost to vibrations.
• They allow the rider to maintain better contact with the road, especially on imperfect pavement.

As a result, less energy is wasted, and more of your pedaling effort is converted into forward motion.
Today, it is also worth noting that 25 mm tires are no longer the standard for modern performance road bikes. Tire and rim technology have evolved together, and choosing the correct tire width now also depends on the internal width of the rim. A modern wider rim is designed to work optimally with wider tires, improving support, rolling efficiency, comfort, and cornering stability.
Of course, this only applies up to a point. A tire that is excessively wide or run at an excessively low pressure may increase aerodynamic drag or casing losses, which can offset these benefits. That's why selecting the right combination of tire width, rim internal width, and tire pressure for your weight, riding style, and road conditions is essential.
In summary, the increased speed comes primarily from reduced rolling resistance and improved efficiency, not from the slightly larger wheel diameter.
