Travis Brown-hedersknyffel

"Colin was nice enough to get us an interview with Travis Brown, an all around good guy:
"Travis, is this your favorite time of the year because it is cyclocross season?
"It is actually. I truly believe that either for racing or spectating that ‘cross is the most dynamic discipline in cycling. It is also perfect for working stiffs since it really takes far less time to train properly than other cycling disciplines. Oh, and it is perfect for singles (speeds).
"What are you up to once the cross races stop?
"I will take a break from the bike and nordic ski until the new year. I might do the Birkie this year if we have good enough snow to get some good training days in.
"Are you still spending time singlespeeding?
"Yes, I am! Its funny that I have gotten that question this year since I have only raced my cross single once. If I could figure out a gig where I could justify racing a single in all races I would do it but I think I am going to have to start my own brand to justify that.
"Brown Bikes has a nice ring to it. You’ve said that singlespeeding is one of your passions. Has this diminished over the years as singlespeeding has become more popular, or just the opposite?
"It has grown for me. As it becomes more popular there just ends up being that many more people that you can share the experience with. Enjoying riding single speeds is such an artistic experience it is hard to explain it, people just have to feel it for themselves. I really think that its growth is far from over too.
"So, what do you think is the most interesting thing about singlespeeding?
"If I have to put it in one sentence that is always; Single speeds distill the riding experience. They are quieter, lighter, more durable and less maintenance than traditional bikes.
"What is the toughest singlespeed ride/race that you have done?
"I think some of the Wednesday cross rides when we cool down up the canyon and climb over Poor Man Road. I only did that once on the single. I guess I don’t think of many single speed rides as tough because riding my single speed makes me feel tough which makes the ride seem easier, if that makes any sense.
"
Do you think your rigid singlespeed is and advantage in short track racing?
I think that in short track racing or cross on the right course there is very little disadvantage to being on a single. The lighter weight is an advantage. The advantage for me is simply that I am more inspired when I race my single so I get more out of my body than I would on a geared bike.
"Cool. Any chance we will get to see you do an endurance race on your singlespeed?
"I am generally not a fan of ultra distance racing. The one year that I did Moab on a team I was sick for two weeks afterward. I like the 12 hour format quite a bite more. It is an ironic question though since I have been discussing it this week. I think it is the only way someone would get me back into the ultra-endurance events is on a single.
"I listen to my mp3 player during 24hr races. I recall you have a huge MiniDisc collection. Is this still the case or have you jumped on the Ipod bandwagon?
"I am a big IPod fan now, the convenience is just to great. I think you could put the IPod on a list of top five training innovations of the last few years.
"What music has your interest right now?
I don’t have the free time I did when I was cultivating my image as a music slut which is OK since I probably spent enough on music for a couple of lifetimes. I could probably live on Drum and Base and Punk but I think there are appropriate moments for all types of music.
"Do you get the chance to see any bands live?
"Well, my wife and I had a sitter this week to see De La Soul and sadly enough we were to tired to go.
"VW has been a great fit for Trek and a huge supporter of mountain bikeing over the years.
"You drive one right? What color?
"I have a Eurovan and a Jetta wagon. Black is the only color of car for me. I think that the 1.8T engine has proven to be one of the most tunable yet durable engines ever. The new R32 is amazing but they haven’t sent me one of those yet. I’m still waiting for my W12 Pheaton too.
"Black 1.8T VWs are the bomb ;). So then what do you do with most of your free time?
"There is no such thing as free time anymore. I spend a lot of time with my daughter and wife (Zara and Mary), less time tinkering with bikes, the motorcycles are very lonely these days.
"You’re a pretty level headed guy, but what gets your blood boiling? Ignorance? Politics? Stupid drivers?
"Well, ignorance, of course, that is pretty open ended question. I am still in shock at the presidential race and the dysfunction of our two party system that so many feel is the only option. OK, now you did it, I’m pissed off.
"Do you think we will ever see a singlespeeder race in the Olympic mountain bike race? Maybe with two beers in their water bottle cages?
"Why would they want to. The Olympics is racing hype to the tenth power, not that it wasn’t the experience of a lifetime but you have to call a spade a spade. It would be pretty funny though to see someone jump through all of the hoops of making the team and then show up to the start line hammered on a single speed.
"Will we see you at the singlespeed worlds in ’05 since it will be back in the USA (Pennsylvania)?
"There is a very good chance of that.
Travis Brown. VW/Trek proffs. Det finns fortfarande hopp.
