Sounds like a cool place. Hey. I have two options of heading
north from the Gulf of Bothnia. Either along the border
or inland like on my blog
http://arctic-cycler.com/biking-2013/sweden-2013/

What is to see on the inland route? mountains? different things
to the border route?

Looking forward to Sweden. I will be there the day after
tomorrow. The boat isn't leaving tomorrow evening.

See you!

When riding in Finland you expect to see a lot of lakes but you hardly see any from the roads. Hope you will enjoy the Swedish roads.

The reception in the northern of sweden is very sensitive to the phone company you connect to. In cities I guess they all work but in the wilderness Telia and Halebop ( same network ) is the best bet , but don't blame me if it sucks.
I would not put too much trust in it.
Ofcourse the local people knows best.

I saw quite a few lakes in Finland as I was off the main roads. Looking forward to Sweden now. :-)

I was kind of hoping for reception. My experience in northern Norway was good.
I will be roaming so I guess my phone will pick up what is available.
Where does the reception start to get patchy?
I'm at the harbour now in Vasa leaving for Sweden soon. :-)

Telia 3G & 2G ,
2G is the better .

Not that many lakes on the west coast. Beautiful archipelago from Vasa up to Karleby/Kokkola though.

Hi Jonas.
The Turku archipelago was lovely too. :-)

The Netherlands to Nordkapp via Baltic countries and Sweden
Hi all.
I am trying to decide whether I should take my big planned detour in the North of Sweden. See the route here http://arctic-cycler.com/biking-2013/sweden-2013/

I would quite like to see the higher mountain landscape of Lappland. What sort of scenery is in the detour, and how does it compare with following the Swedish/Finnish border northwards?

Thanks for your comments!

Matthew

If I had time I would go for the detour. The last 60 km before Karesuando are really nice. You will not see much of the big mountains but really nice high altitude birch forests and heath lands. The road near the Tornio river are nice with more old farmland and less forest.

Sounds really nice. I will have the time and think I will do that. I will also spend some time on the far northern fjords and peninsulas in northern Norway. I've been cycling more each day than I need to so I can do these cool things.

Is it worth going to Tornio or to head more northwards after Luleå? My planned route does not follow anything official at that point. I just chose a road on the map. :-)

Thanks for your help and greetings from my lunch stop in Piteå.

I can't see your maps at your blog, doesn't work on my phone. But if you want do see, and cycle some mountain, you have Flatruet, road between Ljungdalen and Funäsdalen. It's the highest "landsväg" in Sweden the views gives you for example Helags glacier. It's a hilly section to ride but fantastic nature and views.

Thanks for the advice. That sounds like just the kind of road I would like to cycle. Maybe for next time. I am currently in Råneå near Luleå and am cycling north. I plan to take a route that moves inland from the border. That should give some nice scenery.

See ya!

Aha, first I thought you were planning the way you should take to go back ;)

Very nice reports. Never thought much about the Alta valley before but it looks very worthwhile! The whole thing gives me itchy feet. I like Norway its mountain ranges and its many steep descents. But the food prices can easily break the bank!

Indeed Norway is a bit expensive. But it is so spectacular. Today I discovered an amazing tundra road. Amazing. :-)

A bit expensive is being quite diplomatic, I think! Of course, the salaries are higher in Norway as well, so, to the Norwegians the prices are probably quite OK.

However, although I have never been that far north in Norway (Andenes is as far as I have come), I do agree with you that Norway is spectacular. If you like climbing on your bike as well, I would recommend the area to the west of the part of the first part of your 97 trip for some future trip. There are lots of amazing views there. Of course, you do not get the wilderness in the same way as far up north, but I think you may be able to find one or two mosquitos. ;-)

As a sidenote, it's quite remarkable how things change. In the late 70s/early 80s, I remember seeing shops on the Norwegian side of the border where Swedes would go to buy things/food because the prices were lower than in Sweden. These days, there are shops on the Swedish side of the border making huge money on Norwegians.

By the way, I really like your blog.

Hey. Thanks for your message and tips. Always looking for new ideas.
This time I will be doing lots of exploring in the far north. Lots of those remote
peninsulas.

All the best and greetings from Oldenfjord.

Good job! Looks a bit lonely and wind exposed on some of the last stretches. No woods to shelter in. That was a good trip! All the way from Eindhoven was it? That's some good trip!
