But does bucking really make your time 20-30 minutes faster?
Doubtful in my opinion.

I would say it does.

I was out testing the Gravel SM course today. It's tight, technical and rough. No hills at all, but loads of extremely sharp corners where you have to slow down to almost nothing and then accelerate out.

Before the single track at the end of the lap, I had an average of 386w and just under 35kph. It's massively more technically demanding than Cykelvasan and much slower and my average speed today wasn't very far way from top 10 at CV.

At my race pace (about 340-360w for 3-4hrs), I would lose a good 50-80w on an MTB to aero positioning. It's just not possible to be aero on an MTB and the closest you can get (holding the middle of the bars and tucking) is quite unsafe.

Hej allihopa!

Ok.

What can you say about the course (SM gravel 2026)? How much is single trail, how long stretches are rough (shot rock / rough timber roads), and how much is fine gravel or tarmac?

Did you race Halmstad, Bengtsfors, Isaberg or any of the other SM/Swecup courses?

I've tested Halmstad, but not raced it. I found that course to be largely OK, but I didn't like that there was over 30km of asphalt, but also some extremely rough gravel sectors in the forest. It made equipment selection tough - do you go semi slick to focus on the asphalt or grippier tyres for the forest gravel? In the end, I decided to head back to the UK to race at Graean Cymru, which is a course that suits me better (a little shorter, much hillier and more technically demanding) and I qualified 3rd out of 86 in my age group.

I will ride Halmstad this year though, as it's at the end of September rather than August. Heat is my enemy!

As regards the Gravel SM course, it's mostly OK. Oscar has done a very good job on the course creation with one exception (that I'll come to). I just need to stipulate that I absolutely hate flat courses. I actively avoid riding anywhere without hills.

There isn't really any champange (ie, really smooth) gravel anywhere on the course. It's all ranging from moderately smooth to really rough.

At the end of the neutralised section, you swing right into the forest and you have some fairly rough double track. Quite overgrown, with bushes hanging out into the track. It remains pretty rough for a couple of kilometers, You turn right onto a larger gravel road (careful on the corner - it's one of many, many very sharp, loose corners) and it drags gently uphill for 3.3km (elevation gain of 20m). Smoothish gravel, but loose in places.

At the top, it's fast for a while on smoothish gravel. Forgive my lack of a precise recollection, but much of the course looks like much of the rest of the course. Basically, it's smoother and faster at the start of the lap (except for the first 2km) and slower and more technical later on.

The issue for me (and I've discussed and debated this with Oscar) is the inclusion of some extremely rough single track right at the end of the lap. This rough section is preceded by just over 1km of really nice single track - it's fast, flowy, requires good bike handling, but there is always a smooth line through.

The idea is that just before the end of the lap that the course will split and there will be two single tracks to choose from. A rougher, shorter one and a smoother, longer one. I've only ridden the rough one as the smooth one isn't finished yet.

The rough one is really quite extraordinarily rough. Loads of big rocks and roots everyehere. Unavoidable too. There are 2-3 actual drops where you have to ride down 15-20cm drops off boulders.

I rode the course with a friend who races MTB and he said that whilst he could have pushed harder to go faster (he already dropped me on that section) he was worried about breaking his bike. I should add that we're both on gravel bikes with MTB tyres.

I tried quite hard to persuade Oscar that I don't think technical MTB trails should be in gravel races, but we have had to agree to disagree. It seems like the inclusion of a technical MTB trail that's 800m long gives an unfair advantage to those with an MTB background as well as increasing the risk of mechanical issues and crashes.

But I've made my feelings clear and I wait to see what the alternative, longer and easier route looks like.

In terms of equipment choice - big tyres and fairly big gears are recommended. I was riding 2.1" Schwalbe Racing Rays, and my friend Martin was riding Thunderburts with a 2.25" up front and a 2.1" back.

You spend a lot of time on this course railing around high speed corners on less than perfect gravel. You need lots of grip. There is also a lot of rough gravel where you won't find grip with skinny tyres. Similarly, the numerous extremely sharp corners on the course are all loose and challenging. If you ride skinny tyres on this course, you will be at a disadvantage everywhere (and especially on the single tracks).

I had 1.4 bar front and 1.6 bar back and I'm 99kg.

Many thanks for that detailed description.

Guess they want the course to be more decisive. Belgian gravel courses are often more technical than here, without becoming MTB races. I’m also not fond of races where you actually gain by riding a mountainbike. A gravel course should be fast and twitchy and speed paired with the course conditions (loose and hard packed, gravel, sand, mud) is what makes it technical. Not roots, drops and large stones. That only adds risks for punctures, mechanicals, crashes but foremostly traffic jams. Generally it takes an hour for smaller groups to form so if there are sections with technical single trail in the first 30K or so there will be queues.

Kanske 2027 .

I am all for a bit of technical gravel. It's where I do best really, as I predominantly train on gravel, so my bike handling is good. Technical gravel and lumpy single track with drops are two really different things though.

I wish I'd taken some photos. I have been trying to find photos online that show something similar, but I can't. It's that distinctly Swedish combination of large roots and rocks. Unpleasant and slow when ridden slowly, but dangerous when raced on a gravel bike and doubly so if it's wet.

A friend who raced the course back in 2024 during the SweCup noticed I'd ridden there this week and asked me about it. When I mentioned the single track, this is what he said:

"Is it the same bike park as two year ago? That one was horrible, split the whole group apart even though you did not have to invest much power or skill, was purely about making chaos in the feedzone and getting into the single track first"

He races elite gravel, road and also some MTB.

There is something quite amusingly backwards about having an MTB race with perfect gravel (Cykelvasan) and a gravel race with technical MTB trails (this year's Gravel SM).

Maybe we need a commonly agreed up definition of what exactly is gravel and what is MTB.

For me, I am happy to see some single track in a gravel race, but that shouldn't include unavoidable roots and rocks, or physical drops/jumps.

For MTB, I would say that well groomed gravel should probably be avoided as well.

I get the impression that you have a rather narrow definition of what is OK in your world.
I would try to see the different variations as a fun challenge.

I just think gravel races should be on gravel (not asphalt, not MTB tracks) and MTB should be on MTB tracks, and not really gravel or asphalt.

They are all, of course, just niches within the sport of cycling, but Sweden has such a vast network of gravel roads, I just don't know why you'd want to ride singletrack for which gravel bikes are not suitable, or even safety rated.

Since nationals should follow UCI rules for gravel I guess the organizer can do whatever they want within the rules. I haven’t seen the section you’re talking about but if it’s just roots and rocks that should be ok.

That different routes would be allowed in a gravel race following UCI rules is a bit surprising though.

Cykel mot annat
Hmmmm.

Yes, I agree, some single track is fine. But it shouldn't include drops that almost have to be jumped or large rocks and roots.

Småland is absolutely spoilt for choice for amazing gravel. Every type possible. Before going over to compete at the UCI qualifier in Wales last September, I was able to plan and ride a route that was almost a mirror image of the race course, in terms of climbs, technical demands, surface conditions.

Even that course in Wales (where the choice of gravel is much more limited) didn't have any rough single track. What there was was flowy, fast and fun, with a bit of mud thrown in to keep you awake!

Gravel Grit and Grind has too much asphalt. I understand why though - it's a big event now and the hosting venue is a fair way south and west, where gravel roads are more limited. It is unavoidable.

I take your points about needing something to create separation, and I completely agree. The easiest, and safest way to do this is hills.

So many races in Sweden (especially on asphalt) are held on incredibly flat courses. There are loads of places that are properly hilly, so why are they generally avoided?

I've got about 5-6 potential SM course options around out village, all of which are around 40km per lap, with climbing ranging from 500-700m per lap. I promise you that a course like that would create plenty of separation.

When I did the UCI qualifier in Wales, I was on course with about 300-400 other people, but because it was hilly (102km, 1900m), very few groups really held past the first 15km. By the time the first hill was done, everyone was racing more or less solo. I much prefer that.

Why? The average Swede speaks English as well as the average English person. I understand almost all the Swedish I'm reading, and occasionally have to use Google Translate. Typing Swedish on an English keyboard takes absolutely ages (all those extra vowels).

I am a big believe in language as a communication tool and I'm not a purist abou it. So long as everyone understands, it's all good. You can always set your browser to display everything in your language of choice, should you want to.

There’s UCI rules on stuff like this, that it should be avoided. As always, it’s a bit vague.

Now I doubt the UCI cares much about Swedish gravel NC but could be something to bring up if you’re having a dialogue with the organizer.

On the topic of the road NC, afaik the issue is nobody wants to organize it, and if they want to they can’t make that perfect route. It takes a bunch of resources of the organizing club and dealing with whatever government agency it is for all the permits and road closures (if they’re even closed, I’m not sure) is apparently a pain in the ass.

My understanding is that it is really quite tough to organise a race here in Sweden, in terms of obtaining the correct permissions. I've discussed this at reasonable length with a friend at Abloc, as I've been involved with route checking, test riding and altering some of their gravel events just before the events themselves.

I take my hat off to anyone who takes it upon themselves to organise a sanctioned race, so I have no criticism for their work ethic, their commitment to the sport and to their selflessness.

It is (keeping that in mind) for that very reason that I think the races should not be exclusionary or needlessly difficult or risky. For all of the work that goes into organising a race, by including something like a technical MTB trail, you alienate at least half of the racers, whose overriding memory of the race will be "that hideous singletrack" (which is how I first described it when asked about it).
